Guadalajara.
So today started off quite interestingly. Yesterday, while strolling around Retiro, we all decided that we would take a day-trip today. (We includes Kaitlyn, Kate, Jenny, Colleen, Nora, Nicole and myself) We planned on meeting at the Chamartín train station at 11-1115am in order to catch the 1130am train. Easy enough. Or so we thought. Kaitlyn and I left the apartment at 1035am to start making our way to the train station. What we didn’t account for was that we might have to wait at the metro station for a few minutes before it arrived (it felt like 10min because I was already getting stressed on time). We got to the train station around 1115am then encountered problems finding where we were supposed to meet the rest of the group to buy our train tickets for Avila. After finding Colleen, paying 2.70euro just to get through the gates to find people then realizing we were still going the wrong way, we found everyone else. Unfortunately, we were cutting it too close and we had to decide if we wanted to wait around the train station for 2 hours for the next train to Avila or just pick a new destination. We decided to be spontaneous and pick a new place to go.
So off to Guadalajara we went! After a little over an hour train ride, we arrived in Guadalajara and started our adventure. We didn’t really know what Guadalajara had to offer but we figured we could just walk around and explore.
I am not sure if it was because it was saturday or what but the town was fairly deserted. We were able to wonder around the city to find some pretty churches, some neat architecture and nice views.
We were all quickly starting to get hungry, so we were searching for a nice cafe but were having trouble finding a cafe that had tables big enough to fit all seven of us. We happened to run into an old man, who decided to be kind and he walked us straight to a restaurant where we could get fed. We were given our own “private room” downstairs, where no one else was eating yet. We all ordered bocadillos, because who doesn’t love a giant sandwich; and they were just that, giant! I got a tortilla española bocadillo, which was quite large and filling, not to mention delicious! After a relaxing and wonderful meal, we decided to continue walking around a little bit more. Since we had no firm plans of what we wanted to see, we just walked until we were all tired enough to head back.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get some honey, because the stores were closed. According to Kate, Guadalajara is known for their honey, so that is quite a shame. But alas, we tried.
We headed back to the train station and we all basically passed out on the train coming back. Towards the end of the night, we started making plans for the evening. Since Nora is visiting, they wanted to go out to the Irish pub we went to last week. I was down for that, but then the closer I got to the home, the more intense my headache got. Therefore, I decided to pass at the same time that they did too. In fact, I think I’m going to go to bed now since I am starting to feel a little bit sick, probably because Kaitlyn is sick too.
All-in-all, it was a great day. The weather was beautiful, the skies were clear as ever and the company was just lovely.
