El Museo Nacional del Prado
Today, Kaitlyn, Anne and I ventured over to El Museo Nacional del Prado to absorb in some history and art at one of the most famous museums in the world. We spent about 2 hours at the museum and only covered the first floor of the museum. This was quite the feat considering the amount of art that was featured on the first floor.
Unfortunately, photos are prohibited so I was only able to take one photo before I decided not to risk getting yelled at in Spanish. The photo that I took a picture of is one that we discussed in our History class. The picture (El Cambista y su Mujer) features two people, one of them was a banker. In class we observed this photo as the banker being a Jewish man, being that most Jews had jobs as bankers, lawyers, etc before they were exiled from Spain. His wife, is seen as looking away from a book that we assumed was some sort of sacred book, which most likely to show that he is veering away from Catholicism.
We got to see a lot of famous masterpieces, most notably, the work of Goya and his very very dark paintings. I could go on and on talking about the painting that we saw but the gist was:
- Jesus/Mary/the Holy Family/Random other biblical stories
- Beautiful landscapes
- Dark and grotesque paintings of death or in Goya’s case: A man eating his son
- Ornate marble sculptures
As we were leaving the museum, we saw a group of girls eating McDonalds and we all immediately started to crave it. So we went to McDonalds, which had a machine where you could place your order (which happens to be the most efficient thing I have seen thus far in Madrid) and we ate our delicious and American food. Most notable thing that I consumed: Coffee & Ice Cream. Creation of the gods.
