Fulfilling American Stereotypes

So today Kaitlyn and I fulfilled american stereotypes, not once, but twice.

  1. We were instructed to go to the photocopier and ask them to make copies of our spanish class course pack. After wandering around and asking questions of how to get there, we finally found the photocopier. We were told to bring paper with us because at the school, you don’t have to pay for ink, just provide the paper. Prior to our excursion, we purchased a huge thing of paper. We asked the man working to make us the copies and he did. But he never asked us for our paper. I thought maybe we just had to reimburse him with the amount of paper that we used after he printed them. He came over to us and handed us our course pack and asked us something in Spanish. Confused, I asked him if he needed 20 sheets of paper. He said, no, dinero. So then we got really confused because we were then thinking that if would cost us 20 Euro for this dang course pack. But we started to get out 20 Euros, then the man said, “No, I only need 2.20 Euro”. In english. Because obviously we are too stupid to understand him in Spanish. We both immediately go, “ooooooh!”, pay our money, then walk away in shame.
  2. Not ten minutes later, were we walking home from class and still lamenting on the horrors that was that encounter when we get to the crosswalk and see a green light. We both start walking and Kaitlyn nearly gets hit by a car because the green light was not illuminating the crosswalk sign. No it was telling cars that they were allowed to drive. I scream as a car honks at Kaitlyn causing people to stare. So we back up quickly and wait for the crosswalk sign to light up incredibly embarrassed.

We both should just tattoo, “Yes, I am American” on our foreheads because there is no way to avoid the staring and these stupid actions. I apologize Spain. I really do.
